Client’s Wish List:

Take a closed-off kitchen space and create a modern layout that brings improved natural light and flow, hoping to streamline everyday family tasks and develop a space that is optimized for greater family interaction in the process. Create a more defined link beteen the kitchen and the dining area by introducing open-concept living to an older semi-detached home layout.

Transformative Details:

Developed an open-concept floorplan with a galley-style kitchen created a hub with efficientuse and while being sensitive to a family lifestyle. Opening the wall up between the dinning area and the kitchen provides the opportunity to keep an eye on the kids while preparing dinner. The kitchen also acts as a transfer space to maximize usage, given the small footprint, providing access to the rest of the house. Contrasts in backsplash tile, glossy quartz countertops, open shelving, and built-in under-the-counter microwave introduce the look of custom cabinetry to store-bought cabinets. The existing floors ere restored with a honey-coloured finish ading warmth to the space giving it a homey feel. This modern aesthetic will stand the test of time for this family of four.

Features:

New pot lights on dimmers were added to both rooms. The stove was moved to an outside wall to allow for direct-venting of the range hood. The existing kitchen window is raised to allow for additional counter space. Updating the HVAC made the home more energy efficient Care was taken in providing architectural detailing that preserves the past while bringing the home into the present.
